Darrel L. Johnson age 78 died Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at his home near Tamarack.
Darrel was born March 25, 1940 at Cromwell, Minnesota. That day it was 20 below zero and his parents Gustav Martin and Della (Pence) Johnson were on their way to the hospital when Darrel decided it was time and his parents needed to stop at a home outside of Cromwell and that is where Darrel was born. He grew up and attended the North Star School near Tamarack and then the McGregor High Scholl from which he graduated in 1959. He farmed north of Tamarack with beef cattle and also worked with his brother Walter logging. He logged until 2002 and continued farming until he retired in 2016. He married Elaine Geving on October 12, 1968 in Proctor, Mn. Elaine died in 2005. Darrel married Kathleen (Oleson) Johnson on February 24, 2077. In 2008 they built a new home near the farm and have lived there since. Darrel enjoyed country and blue grass music. He also enjoyed collecting and shopping. He loved to read the newspaper and also watch the news on TV. He volunteered at the Essentia Hospital in Duluth in the oncology department. He was instrumental in setting up the snack cupboard and always saw to it that it was well stocked for the patients and their families.
He is survived by his wife Katy Johnson of Tamarack, Children: Deb (John) Hanson of McGregor, Russ Cutter of Ironton, Dave (Tammi) Cutter of Ironton, Mike (Nancy) Cutter of St. Paul, Mn., Marty Johnson of Tamarack, Melinda Toutges of Aitkin; Step Children: Debbie (Larry) Goble of Palisade, Ben Johnson of Aitkin, Andy (Pam) Johnson of Aitkin, Sara (Jamie) McCormick of Aitkin; Sister: Marge LeVesseur of Hutchinson, Mn.; 28 Grandchildren and 34 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Elaine, Brother: Walter Johnson, Step Son: Chuck Johnson and grandson Brandon Harwig.
A funeral service will be held Monday, March 18, 2019 at 11 AM from the Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell with Rev. William Sass and Rev. Mark Wagner officiating. Burial will be in the Round Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 PM at the McGregor Funeral Home and also 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
