Ruth Elizabeth (Swedberg) Maijala

Ruth Elizabeth Maijala, age 98 of Tamarack died Thursday, July 18, 2019 at the Villa Marina Care Center in Superior, Wisconsin.

Ruth was born October 30, 1921 in McGregor, Minnesota the daughter of Emil and Emmy (Bylund) Swedberg. She grew up in the McGregor area and attended schools and then lived in Duluth where she graduated from Denfield High School. She married Walter Maijala on November 9, 1940 in Duluth, Minnesota. They made their home on the farm in the Tamarack area where they dairy farmed for many years and in the later years had raised beef cattle until her husband Walter’s death in 2001. She was a member of the Tamarack Free Church, was a Sunday School teacher and church secretary for 50 years. She was also a member of the Tamarack Senior Golden Age Group and had served as the secretary of the Salo Cemetery Association for many years.

She is survived by her son James Maijala of Tamarack, Daughter and son in law: Elaine and John Smith of Superior, Wisc.; 6 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; 3 sisters in law: Ailie Otterson of Cloquet, Mn.; Evelyn Swedberg and Ruth I. Maijala both of McGregor. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter in 2001, 1 brother Elmer. 1 sister: Martha Wilkes, grandson John Maijala and daughter in law Maxine Maijala.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at 2 PM from the Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell on Hwy 210 at 2 PM with Rev. Debra Hanson-Carlson and Rev. Ron Staudinger officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Salo Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Salo Cemetery Association or the Tamarack Free Church. Arrangements are with the McGregor Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
