Duyane “Pete” Petersen passed away at St. Therese of New Hope on April 15, 2020 at the age of 82 due to complications from COVID-19.
He was born April 2, 1938, in Aitkin, MN, to Walt and Rose (Specht) Petersen. Pete graduated from Aitkin High School and served in the U.S. Army. Upon his return from the military, Pete worked at Honeywell in Minneapolis and married Gwen (Loken) Petersen. He then moved to Grand Rapids, MN, where they raised their family and worked for Mortenson Construction until retirement. He then moved to Cohasset and eventually Aitkin where he lived several years until moving into Aicota Assisted Living. Most recently, he moved to the Minneapolis area to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
Pete loved to play “bean bag” at the Legion with his Aitkin friends, golf, camp, fish, hunt with his sons and grandsons and spend time with his children and grandchildren. Pete is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Charlotte, Bud, Charles (Chub) and Warren (Wally). Pete is survived by his sons, Michael (Sarah) Petersen, Chanhassen, MN, Matthew (Tammy) Petersen, Waconia, MN and daughter, Theresa (Brian) Novotny, Blaine, MN and grandchildren, Tripp and Carly (Mike), Audrey and Greta (Terri), Samantha and Luke (Matt).
The family would like to thank the Veterans Affairs of Minneapolis, the Allina Hospice Team and the nurses and aides at St. Therese of New Hope. He touched so many lives with his infectious smile and charm. He will be missed. A celebration of life will take place at the American Legion Post #86 of Aitkin at a later date.
