Gary Herbranson Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Herbranson, who left this world peacefully at the age of 76 (March 5,1949 - July 30, 2025). A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Gary was cherished for his deep love of family and lifelong passion for the outdoors. Nature was Gary’s sanctuary and nowhere was that more true than at his beloved cabin on Big Sandy Lake. Whether fishing, hunting with his beloved dogs, walking the wooded trails or simply sitting on the dock watching the water and wildlife, Gary found peace and joy in the quiet beauty of such a special place. It was where he felt at home and where many treasured memories were made.

Gary was a teacher for a couple of decades, his passion was nurturing and encouraging the positive growth and development of children, our most precious resource. In the summers he could be seen chainsaw carving on the lake, with many of his carvings located throughout the area. In his twenties he began the first Cancer Support Group through St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul. He was constantly using his many talents to support others, benefit non-profit organizations, along with volunteer coaching in many sports. He was a fantastic supporter of his children and grandchildren in all areas, especially encouraging their artistic development, love of nature and all outdoor activities. He also had a passion for his dogs; training, hunting and nurturing them.

Gary is survived by his wife, Kathy of McGregor; son, Jon and daughter-in-law, Dr. Melissa Herbranson, Aitkin; grandchildren, Brooke, Hunter and River; brother, Les (Barb) Herbranson, brother-in-laws; Steve (Nancy) Apfelbacher, Scott (Brenda) Apfelbacher and Jeff (Bren) Apfelbacher, along with nephews/nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Brian Herbranson; parents, Jerry and Eldora Herbranson; and in-laws Frederick and Shirley Apfelbacher.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 9th, 11:00 am at Holy Family Catholic Church in McGregor followed by a luncheon. Father Mike Patullo will officiate. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Workman Township of Aitkin County.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lux Mundi (a charitable organization), 299 Read Oak Dr., Aitkin, MN,  which will dedicate the donations to a non-profit wellness organization.
