Gerald "Gary" Miller Obituary

Gerald “Gary” K. Miller, 70, of Aitkin, MN, passed away Friday, September 18, 2026, at his home with his family by his side. Gary was born July 1, 1956, in Little Falls, MN, the son of Kenneth and Jeanette (Wochnick) Miller. He grew up on the family farm in Little Falls, where he developed a strong work ethic and a lifelong love of the outdoors. He enjoyed snowmobiling with his brothers, hunting, and spending time at the family cabin on Peavy Lake whenever farm chores allowed. He graduated from Little Falls High School in 1975.

Gary met Patricia “Patty” Popp at the Little Falls fair, where he was working at a farm equipment display. The couple was united in marriage on June 17, 1978, in Royalton, MN. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and a deep devotion to one another.

Gary moved to Aitkin shortly before their marriage and continued his career in the agricultural equipment business, building and opening Northwood Equipment, a John Deere dealership, in 1978. He went on to become an owner and partner in additional dealerships in Little Falls, Wadena, and Baxter. He took great pride in the business he built and spent more than three decades serving farmers and the communities around him before the business was sold in 2013. Gary cared deeply for his employees and the relationships he built with customers, many of whom became lifelong friends. He believed that anything worth doing was worth doing right and to do right by others. After the sale of the business, he continued working for several years before retiring, although retirement never quite meant slowing down. He started a stump grinding business and always had some project underway, whether for himself or someone else.

Gary was a talented carpenter who could build or fix just about anything, from furniture and decks to remodeling his family home. He enjoyed elk hunting in Montana and Colorado, annual snowmobile trips to West Yellowstone with friends, hunting with his grandsons, and spending time with family and friends at the cabin on Peavy Lake.

Having grown up spending summers at the family cabin, he later purchased a place just down the lake, where he and Patty continued the tradition of making memories with their own family and beloved “lake family.” The lake was Gary’s happy place. Summer weekends were filled with pontoon rides, swimming, tubing, fishing, campfires, and laughter. Gary especially loved visiting with friends and neighbors, watching the sun rise and set over the lake, and taking just one more pontoon ride. After retirement, he and Patty were able to spend even more time at the place they loved.

Faith and family always came first for Gary, and he loved Patty fiercely. He found great joy and treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren, siblings, and extended family, especially the large family gatherings around the holidays and weekends at the lake. He loved having his grandchildren help with projects and in the garden, teaching them along the way, and enjoyed playing cards and sharing time together. Gary showed his love through the time he spent with others and the many ways he cared for them, always willing to lend a hand and never expecting anything in return.

Gary's Catholic faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin and later St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Crosby, serving on church boards at both parishes. He turned to prayer throughout his life, especially when faced with important decisions or difficult times. His faith provided him with strength and peace. Gary enjoyed reading his daily devotionals, listening to Christian music, and, of course, a little Neil Diamond.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Jeanette Miller, and his grandson, Westin Justen.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Patty; children, Dana (David) Justen of Aitkin, MN, Venessa (Dave) Fiedler of Salem, OR, Jacob (Angie) Miller of Fargo, ND, and Charlie Miller (Shannon Gallagher) of Boston, MA; grandsons, Gavin Justen and Arlo Miller; granddaughters, Layla Klemetson and Harper Klemetson; sisters and brother-in-law, Kathy (Kevin) Gamble and Luann Steidl; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin (Teresa) Miller, Ronald (Jeannie) Miller, Joe (Mary) Miller, and Brian Miller (Kim Ernest); and many other special relatives and friends who mourn his passing.

A service and celebration of Gary’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Aitkin.  www.srtfuneral.com
