James Berg Obituary

James M. Berg, called Jim by all, passed away peacefully at his home in McGregor on Thursday, August 8, 2024. Born on September 28, 1943, in Gary to Marvin and Henrietta (Roe) Berg, Jim lived a life full of dedication, service, and love.

After graduating from Gary High School, Jim attended Moorhead State College.  Jim began his professional life in education, teaching high school history and coaching football and basketball in McGregor for two years.  Jim was drafted into the Army and served for two years before returning to McGregor to continue teaching.  It was in McGregor that he met the love of his life, Betty Maron. They were married in March of 1970 and shared 54 wonderful years together.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Berg; his daughters, Jennifer Wolfe and Judith Berg; his son-in-law, Andrew Wolfe; and his cherished grandchildren, Nicholas Wolfe, Zachary Wolfe, and Sophie Wolfe. Jim’s family was his pride and joy, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion.

A proud member of the Masons and Shriners also Jim was a member of the Gary MN American Legion and actively involved with the McGregor American Legion, Jim’s commitment to community service was evident throughout his life. After retiring from a successful career in sales leadership and entrepreneurial ventures in 2007, Jim continued to give back to his community. He worked as a substitute teacher in the McGregor School District and served as the chairman for Workman Township for 13 years until his passing.

Jim’s kindness, wisdom, and dedication touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed by all who know him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless students and community members whose lives he impacted.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24 at 11 AM in Grace Lutheran Church, McGregor with Pastor Lorelie Robinson officiating.  Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church.  Family and friends will gather to celebrate Jim’s remarkable life. Interment with full military honors will take place at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.  Rest in peace, Jim.
