Mary D. Mikes, 99, of Lone Lake/Aitkin, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2025 in Aitkin Health Services, Aitkin. She was born January 16, 1926 in South St. Paul to Frank and Anna (David) Schmidt. Mary graduated from St. Paul High School in 1943. Mary was united in marriage to Lawrence “Larry” Mikes on May 10, 1947 in South St. Paul. She worked at Cenex in South St. Paul for 23 years. Mary and Larry moved to Lone Lake in 1977. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Aitkin, Lone Lake Property Assn. and Aitkin Birthday Club. Mary enjoyed gardening, playing cards (especially cribbage), traveling, visiting with relatives, friends and neighbors.
Mary is survived by nephews and nieces; special friends and neighbors, Elaine Palthe and Gay Van Slooten, both of Aitkin and good friend, David Dusbabek; also, Jerry and Julie Nelson, Carol and Bob Burgmeier and Lou Ann and Al Carlson.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; parents; 2 sisters, Kathryn Taylor and Anne MacRunnels; brother, George Schmidt and long-time friend, Donald Hale.
Services will be Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at 11 AM in Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin with Pastor David Becker officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Following the service, a luncheon will be held in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Aitkin. Private Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
