Mary Catherine VanDerSchaegen, 72 of Aitkin, died Sunday, October 6, 2019 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. She was born December 7, 1946 in Pittsburgh, PA. to William Charles and Ruth Francis (Williams) Wallace. She graduated from Fox Chapel High School and then Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania where she earned a Bachelors degree in education and teaching. Mary was united in marriage to Dennis Leo VanDerSchaegen June 20, 1970 in Pittsburgh, PA. She was a Kindergarten teacher at Cedar Riverside Community School in Minneapolis and also worked at Glad Creations Quilt Shop in Minneapolis. Mary enjoyed quilting and doing the “Shop Hop for Quilters. She was a member of Minnesota Quilters, the Renegade quilt group, and St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin.
She was preceded in death by her parents: William and Ruth Wallace and her sister: Elaine Cavanaugh.
Mary is survived by her husband Dennis VanDerSchaegen, Sr. of Aitkin
Son and daughter-in-law: Dennis and Amber VanDerSchaegen, Jr.
of Houston, TX.
Sister: Bridget Wallace of Butler, PA.
And many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 11:00A.M. – Friday, October 11, 2019 at St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin. Father David Forsman will officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
