Merle “Murph” Grant Peterson, 85 of Aitkin passed away Friday, May 9th at Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. He was born August 14th, 1938 in Aitkin to Ernest and Cecilia (Goslein) Peterson. He grew up in Cambridge, MN and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1956. Murph proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for two years, stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. Following his military service, he returned home and became a barber in several cities—a career he devoted 35 years to with pride and skill. He cherished the conversations, friendships, and loyalty of the many customers who sat in his chair over the years. Murph was united in marriage to Laura Jean Anderson at St. John’s Lutheran church, Aitkin on July 14th 1962, where they maintained their lifelong membership. Beyond the barbershop, Murph gave tirelessly to his community. He served as a county commissioner, where he brought his love for Aitkin and its people to every decision he made. He was also a valued member of the Aitkin Fire Department for 18 years, responding to calls with courage and compassion. Murph’s passions were many. He was a lifelong sports fan who loved basketball, football, and golf, always ready to catch a game or share a spirited conversation about the latest scores. Sunday afternoons were often reserved for watching NASCAR, a tradition he looked forward to every week. To his family and friends, Murph was a pillar of strength and warmth. He always shared a gentle smile and a memorable laugh. He was an extraordinary father and grandfather, never missing a moment to make memories. A special tradition he held dear was taking his grandchildren to the Aitkin Bakery for fresh donuts—a simple joy that brought him great happiness. A lifelong resident and proud supporter of Aitkin, Murph was a familiar face at every local event. His devotion to the city and county was evident in all he did. Murph's life was one of service, kindness, and joy. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
