Vernon Dale Backstrom, 74, of Aitkin, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, February 3, 2023 at his home. He was born June 17, 1948 in Aitkin to Roy and Irene (Olson) Backstrom. Vernon graduated from Aitkin High School Class of 1966 and went on to St. Cloud Vocational School. Vernon was a veteran of The United States Navy and part of United States Naval Construction Battalion, better known as the Navy Seabees who served during the Vietnam War. Vernon was united in marriage to Diana Holm on August 30, 1969 in Aitkin. Vernon worked as a carpenter for Homes and Bridges in the Twin Cities. He was also a Security Guard at Grand Casino Mille Lacs for 18 years until his retirement. Vern enjoyed going to auctions and guns and reloading. He also enjoyed watching Minnesota sports. Vern loved spending time with his kids and grandkids whom he loved dearly.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife, Diana Backstrom of Aitkin; 2 sons, Chad (Traci) Backstrom of Brainerd and Clark (Carla) Backstrom of Brainerd; grandchildren, Riley, Logan, Jon, Justin and Hannah; siblings, Bev Bailey of Iowa, Ken Backstrom of Aitkin, Richard (Jeanne) Backstrom of Hugo, Bob (Debbie) Backstrom of Deerwood and Kris (Carl Berg) Backstrom of Aitkin; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, February 10, from 5-7 PM with a Prayer Service at 6:30 PM in Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home and will continue Saturday, February 11, from 10 AM until the 11 AM Service in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Aitkin with Pastor David Becker officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Aitkin American Legion Post #86 and Aitkin V.F.W. Post #1727. Interment will be at a later date in Bennettville Cemetery, Hazelton Twp.
